electrical questions for Jase
Today i wanted to go for a quick fish in the rain, Had a prick of a day at work and thought a fish would make it all better.
I went to start the ski before I went (as i always do to make sure it goes) and battery was almost dead
I took jumperleads with me and jumped the ski once it was in the water off the tractor, I went for about a 15 min ride and came back to the beach to stop the engine and see if it would start again - Dead as a doorknob, so i put it back on the trailer and came home, its only been a week since I have ridden the ski and didnt expect the battery(which is newish) to flatten, I at least expected it to charge enough for a start in that 15 min ride (my zx9r takes about 7 mins to charge the battery fully if its flat from lack of use)
I am over it for today and drinking corona's now but will attack it tomorrow, im thinking i might put a isolation switch in for the battery after this BS.
Battery terminals are not showing any corrosion, but will inspect them tomorrow..
So my questions are :
I think I left the lanyard on it all week - does this leave the ignition on or something ?
How long would you estimate to charge the battery, riding doing 80k or so ?
Im assuming the voltage across the terminals should be between 13.4-14.8v or there abouts whilst the motor is running ?
CHEERS!

Ah I have computer safe jumper leads and earth the - to the block.. as an ex mechanic I have used this on EFI bikes and cars probably over 500 times and never seen a fried ECU from it. I will take me chances, But yeah plan to charge it up.
If Jase can confirm the lanyard on the FX140 being connected causes current draw that would be mint

Re electrical questions for Jase
I doubt it will solve the problem because it flattened so quick but I put an isolator on mine and would reccommend one.

Re: electrical questions for Jase
I think Mark(2extreme) has some sort of 2nd battery from memory on a past post, I think its more for accessories than a 2nd starting battery which could be a good idea, maybe charging through a diode so it doesn't drain back out.

Re: electrical questions for Jase
the old mans fizz boat has just that - dual battery, isolated second battery, diode on the charging harness. I have a bit of spare cable, terminals and diodes from when I set that up.I dont like leaving my sounder on whilst engine isnt running for paranoia of not being able to start.
with the second battery id probably leave it isolated most of the time and just have it as an emergency start battery.

Re: electrical questions for Jase
I only run a very small 12V SLA battery for running my sounder only. They are about $35 and are small and allow my sounder to run for about 8 hrs before a top up charge is required. I only went down this track to ensure there was no drain at all on main battery and it means my sounder setup is very removable at any point if need be. It all fits in my glove compartment with room still for a few other bits and pieces.
If you want a backup etc then definately go for two normal batteries with switch in place to alternate between 1, 2, both or off.

Re: electrical questions for Jase
sorry for the late reply!
most brands have a small current going through them if you leave the lanyard on,i would suspect the battery even if new.
take the ski to any auto electrical or pwc shop and ask them to load test the battery that will tell you straight away if its the batt.
The standard jetski battery if healthy should be able to handle any starting loads and fish finder.
cheers

Re: electrical questions for Jase
I still might go down the dual battery route, Im an ex coastguard volunteer and they taught me about the importance of rendundant backup systems, The boat I used to do patrols on had dual VHF's, Dual plotter/sounders, 3 batteries, etc etc etc..
ah I have a load tester, Tests fine..
Thanks for the info Jase!
