Hey

Im in the same boat and looking at a Sounder / GPS combo. Budget of approx $1500.00

What could I expect to get for that? I like the idea of one unit. I want to venture off the coast of Tauranga / Whakatane or anywhere really and have recently found out that your blind out there without one. Shocked

I have a 09 FX SHO

Any recommendations gladly received. bounce

Cheers

Shane

Thats fine, the easiest to fit sounder... I supply a bracket that mounts the fish finder in the drinks holder area and a transducer bracket that attaches to the factory bolts on the rear boarding ladder.
I will add some photos later, has the dealer shown you the Ultimate Rod Holder kit, or do you have a different option.

Cheers, Andrew

been cruising this site for a while, and had a go at making a kit. Had a great session at the Mount over the weekend and it stayed on Very Happy Works well so i'll put the extra $$ to a sounder.

Any suggestions on make and model of sounder?

There are some deals on trademe last time I looked for a Eagle gps/ff combo and they included the Nauticpath maps for NZ/Aust (not inland as far as I know).

I have a the Eagle 640C model with external antenna (mounted under the front hatch as still gets a great signal through the fibreglass hull.
Nauticpath maps are good (probably not quite as good as the Navionics or C-Map but since free it saves about $300). Eagle is made by Lowrance - same cases and slightly different specs but it is still a great product just that it is marketted through non-marine channels overseas and so they try and differentiate themselves from the Lowrance brand.

check:
http://www.smartmarine.co.nz/seacharter-642ci-colour-df-gpsfish-finder-np-chart5500w-p-9575.html this has dual freq sensor

or
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Boats-marine/Parts-accessories/Fish-finders/auction-267950556.htm this same as mine single freq sensor - good for near to shore waters but not so good for deep water.

That's my 2 cents - there are probably better units about but these are high res and include the map so are quite good value for money.
Andrew Hill has an adaptor that he sells to fit the unit into the drink holder on the Yamaha units you mentioned and also a nice stainless steel adaptor for the transom mounted sensor.

Depends on the unit but Navionics make 1 type of maps but in 2 variants - blue and gold
you get more for the gold but pay more.
As said in previous post the Eagle has advantage of maps included - the HDS5 unit is very nice but then you need maps - local version of maps is about $250 and whole of NZ is about $375 (Navionics Gold) - there is a platinum maps as well if you have a gps that will take them (Andrew Hills Raymarine units take the Platinum maps and they have extra features.

Go to trademe or a marine website and search for navionics to find prices of the maps before you decide.
