Yes, Fishoe you are supposed to have it registered. Around $35, which is a damn site cheaper than the original $150+ they wanted people to pay.

I hear you will be in Whitianga over Christmas/New Year.....?

It is illegal to use a PWC in the Auckland region without registration.... there is a fine of upto $500 if caught!

Check out these links...

As for other regions... may have to check the harbour master rules/regulations for that area prior to heading out.

Can some one tell me why jetskis need to be registered and boats dont? I hear the excuse of indentification of them when they are stolen but I would of thought that higher insurance premiums would be enough??? Also, was told at th kawakawa ramp last night that I will need to join the club (and prob will) which I would have no problem with as it is a great ramp to use, but didnt the council put a load of money into the project which means it should be free for everyone as we have already paid for it? Correct me if im wrong.

im still waiting on my fricken numbers from the ARC since before Xmas

that Kawakawa bay thing - You dont have to join the club at all... Its good to, and myself and my Dad have, but yeah you are right, council paid a lot of coin for the ramp. On any given weekend only about 20% of the people I see are members.

Jetski's only need to be registered in Auckland & Waikato regions as it is a local bylaw, if you use your ski in both regions then it still only needs to be registered in one. There are various reasons been quoted and theft is one of them and if you are purchasing you can ring them and give them various numbers and they will check if its stolen. I think however it is more to keep jet skiers in line, they have had a bad reputation over the years as "hoons" and making us easily identifyable should make us behave lol! .

Its an easy process though, I rang the 0800 number and the lady was really helpful, I filled the form, scanned & emailed through to her, within an hour I had a reference number to deposit funds into their bank and its not expensive.

As for the boat ramp, don't know about that one but some ramps are club owned and some council owned.

if you have the time you could call into the coast guard office at mechanics bay , thats what i did , they gave me numbers straight away
and then they send out a reciept and confirmation letter that it is registered .
I went in on the 5th jan , office was closed for the 2 weeks prior .

OK here is my 2cents worth ....oh no hang on I mean 50cents worth......

I would advise evey single jetski owner in the country to register their jetski as it is the ONLY registry of ownership. Other than that you have no registry that has a record of YOU owning YOUR ski.....you own the trailer and this is recorded with Transport NZ (whatever they call it) and you complete change of ownerships etc etc but when it comes to the most important and expensive part of your rig there is no official record. Sure you have proof of purchase to some degree and you will have it insured..but other than that nothing, zip, narder, ZERO!!

The registry is not perfect and I believe all watercraft boats and pwcs should go through the same registry as cars etc but kept at the same cost of registring a trailer as the only time ARC or whoever are alerted to a stolen ski is when a new unsuspecting owner trys to register it with them whilst still in your ownership.

Thieves are less likely to steal skis that are registered and even more so if Data Doted (which mine is), even then though chance of any recovery are usually useless. I would say most of us keep them relatively secure in garages etc.

The most frequent insurance claims with boating and watercraft are damage related and not theft anyway.

Hi Guys,

Come down to the BOP, no Reg needed. Obviously we're more responsible jetski owners. Shocked

I understand the theft issue but, I think this is just so people can report you and the coastguard track you down. Lets face it most people don't like jetski's.

The volunteer coast guard had a moan at us for bringing water skiers into shore in a ski lane at more than 5 knots but, under the rules, this is, to the best of my knowledge allowed. To sum it up he told us we could virtually do what we liked over the other side of the harbour in the ski lane on the Island but not on the beach where lots of old people have houses over looking the sea. I rest my case.....and may the old bastards that moan RIP. Twisted Evil
