Could be keen on the trip if you guys are looking to get a group down. I managed to get a dozen or so Kingi's on a trip to Whatuwhiwhi earlier this year. The ski is plenty stable enough only problem is when you get the fish to the ski the reasonable size ones are hard to handle with a big lump of metal thrashing about, I was lucky and my mate helped subdue the bigger ones from his boat , Lots of fun though and I hear there are plenty of good fish in Tairua

Hi again guys, if you are really interested in catching kingfish and got a bit of time to do it, there is a place called Fantail Bay north of Coromandel in the Coromandel Peninsula Google reference 36.31.28.83"S by 175.19.42.37"E thats the camping ground, ski's can be launched by two wheel drive vehicle, fresh water available at camping ground with toilets but you do have to camp. If you look on the google map go north to snapper rock 200 metres out you can just pick up a reef, I've regularly caught 20 pound snapper a few years ago and I know Kingfish hang out there in great numbers. Probably around that area is the beginning of good fishing right up to Fletchers Bay. There is accomodation at Fletchers Bay with camp sites and house accomodation $25.00 a night. Fresh water for washing the ski's plenty of room for parking. I live in Ngatea, it's a good 2 and half hour drive to Fantail Bay, there is no fuel available after coromandel, also it's a hope skip and jump to Barrier weather provided from Port Charles. The positive thing is you can always move to protected areas if weather turns to shit. Tairua is open to the elements if the weather changes your stuck there,I;ve fished at port jackson for thirty years at snapper rock two weeks ago i had 3 kings at my feet all well over a meter long with in a 15 minites of burling never caught one though.

Great info Ken, thanks for sharing that and it sounds like we need to plan a mission up there sometime soon!!!

As for Tairua JAZA, Carl from Epic is still consistantly putting his clients on big bad green machines over all the foul and Pinnacles between Tairua and the Aldies. So it's funny you mention a desire to head down that way as I have been planning to organise a trip which will be based at a property we can rent for a very very cheap rate (know the owner) that will sleep 7 comfortably and has parking for all skis. Full facilities within the house include stuning sea views over the water, BBQ etc on the deck along with a great spa pool to rest aching bodies from being DEALT to by BIG KINGS. I plan to pick a date that has the best moon phase, tides etc with his house available. With cost spilt amongst a crew it will be very affordable.

The bar will be easy as on the skis, but it can get pretty nasty in certain conditions and I have seen a BRAND NEW 7m Hard Top Haines Hunter roll over with an inexperienced boatie affraid in bad conditions.

So up to you if you want to do your own thing, but I will be posting an organised trip away on here very soon which I will facilitate costs and have all contributors who are keen pay up front so we have some commitment from all and I am not mucking the property owner around. The 7 spots will fill up quick I am sure.

So, stay tunned for the upcoming Tairua/Slipper/Aldermans BIG KING and XOS SNAPPER Mission !!!

I feel sorry for all the poor Kingi's that will be slayed in the near future. Prehaps a charter to White island should be arranged? It is spawning season soon. Anyone interested?

Thats right !!!!

But in saying that Alfred Dean used to land some big bad Sharks back in the 50's, as per the image below, so how much has it really advanced other than looks ??????? No, I am sure there has been significant advancements however anglers have done well with whatever gear they have had to use, even the old faithful handline would have accounted for some serious fish:
