Re: anyone heading out saturday
Will see you at Eastern Beach then.
Had a look at Howick beach today at 6:45pm as on way home from work and there are quite a few waves being driven in from the east as easterly wind - just wondered if this might be an issue with launch and retrieve. BB ramp would be sheltered I guess but if we work together to hold skis whilst taking cars back up the ramp then will avoid another chipped hull like last year.
What do you think Eddie?
Anyway whatever way it swings I shall be there as near 5:30am as possible as have ski on car ready to go - just me and the ice to load up
Andrew
021 2564483 (till I get on the ski) will try VHF 6 channel

Re: anyone heading out saturday
Hi there Alex,
saw you leaving boat ramp as I returned but with only 1 in the bin (maybe drifter took them all yesterday afternoon )
My one snapper that I caught was all of 38cm and 3 point next to nothing pound.
It sits alone in the fridge waiting for the knife.
Nice to get out butwould have been nicer to have the weather we all watched and heard about while working.
Need to get some more bites yet.
Still want to find out where Spot X is so I can add a waypoint
cheers

Re: anyone heading out saturday
Oh well at least you guys got on the water, regardless of the result its still great fun.
Spot X is relatively irrelevant as the fish do move around, but in that geenral area will have a good food source. Best thing you can do is know the area which to start looking in.....which you do, i.e Crusoe on the Waiheke side. From there scout around looking for structure and sign of fish schools, once you find a solid school, mark it on your GPS (as the current flow will soon move you off it), then understand your drift direction. Then drift right through it ensuring your softbait is down in the school when you go past. 90% chance of hookup each drift. Before you know it you will have your own spot X. Failing that just ask Myron for the exact location to start looking, but in my mind your better off educating yourselves as to likely locations. I almost wouldn't go a day without restudying a marine chart for areas I would like to fish or ones I had not considered.
Think like a hunter. Remember the old saying ..."Give a man a fish.......... teach a man to fish...."

Re: anyone heading out saturday
As they say...thats fishing..I had an enjoyable day on the water, given it was a quick trip and had to be back for my daughters touch tournament.
It pays to explore and find where the fish are holding, if you have a sounder its just a matter of time as 2X says. Having said that I have been out with my sounder going off and not hook up as well as filled my bin where there is barely any sign on the sounder. Structure is more important, just be careful of Te ika a Maui.
The fish were tentative on the bite today I have come home with a number of half baits where the snaps took their tails, I think the last 2 trips I filled the bin on were all on 1 bait..both trips.
As I say though, I had a nice day, was a bit of swell when we left but that flattened out, I only have 1 fish to show for my efforts and fished where I filled my bin only a few days ago. Unfortunately I lost my sounder as I hadnt charged the sla that runs it and the nav lights for about 3 trips and thought it would last, but no excuses, I dont think it would have made alot of difference today...thats fishing.
At least I have a good sized snap for the BBQ I'm going to tonight, if I had caught anymore they would have been given away anyway.
And to quote a wise old man (no idea who)...a bad days fishing is better than a good day at work, enjoy your time on the water, we all have good and bad days...

As you say that is fishing.....
Still would lkike to be out on a day when the fish are a little more bitey and yes I need to work more on tactics: find them, mark them and then return with rod in hand.
The drift seemed quite quick today so after finding quite a few fish I went back to fish i and couldn't find the same spot again
Good points though Mark and shdbefishn
